Diverse Practical Experience. Fun Challenges. Results.

“Throughout our years working together, Raul maintained a consistently high level of energy and passion for the work. I always have appreciated his ability to balance many priorities and find satisfaction in his work.”

Andy Bowne, Chancellor
Ivy Tech Community College

During my work experience in my career in communications, marketing and public relations, I have held a number of positions in diverse settings, all of which helped me grow, taught me valuable lessons and made me a better storyteller. Below is a glimpse of some the fun adventures I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved with over my twenty-plus years in communications and public relations:

Executive Director of Communications for a community college: helped maintain stable student enrollment at a time when other community colleges were experiencing substantial reduction; led the college through various crisis communications situations; restructured the communications department into a more centralized, efficient one, leading to better storytelling on behalf of the college; managed advertising budget of $700,000

Marketing Director for a large credit union: created a marketing department and team and led the strategic vision and efforts that helped the credit union grow from 32,000 members in 2002 to 42,000+ in 2010; helped brand the credit union through aggressive, grassroots and innovative thinking and strategies

Sponsorship and Public Relations Director for a 10-day music festival in East Lansing: utilizing a community relations-public relations combo approach, attracted the first national sponsors to the festival, while helping it grow in annual revenues

Constituent Representative for a U. S Senator: I have often said that you haven't really done public relations work until you've done it for a political campaign; I had fun writing candidate speeches, campaign issue papers, engaging in intense media relations and doing debate preparation

Corporate Communications Specialist for a large dental health benefits organization: as head of the public relations department, helped brand the organization through a focused community relations and media relations effort

Public relations and marketing communications counsel to small businesses and organizations in the community: from small businesses and retail, to churches and non-profit organizations, including:

  • Ferris State University

  • LINC Revitalization

  • Tropical Smoothie Cafe

  • Artists Creating Together

  • Pine Rest Thrift Store

  • Mosaic Film Experience

  • Supermercado Mexico

  • Lindo Mexico Restaurant

  • Trinity Lutheran Church

  • Burton Meat Farm

  • Hispanic Center of West Michigan
